What To Do Before Your Next Updo

It’s not everyday you have an event so big that you consider an Updo or professional styling but when the event calls here is what you need to know in order to showcase the best Updo at the party or curly style that lasts all night. Brides, wedding guests and prom princesses take note!

  • Prepping your hair is key. Freshly trimmed ends are a must. Frazzled ends do not look pretty poking out of your Updo. Make sure you have been staying on top of your haircuts, don’t wait longer than 6-8 weeks between trims. Another good idea is to treat your hair with a hair mask a week before to ensure your hair is looking its healthiest. Getting a trim on the same day as your Updo isn’t the best idea- see my second tip below.

  • Don’t wash you hair the day of your appointment. Day or two dirty hair has more grip and a higher hold factor than freshly washed hair. The natural oils from your scalp have a chance to distribute to your strands, creating a great canvas for a long lasting Updo. ‘Dirty’, not greasy hair is ideal, your hair type and regular shampoo schedule should guide you in deciding how soon to wash before your appointment.

  • Pre product. After shampooing and conditioning your hair the day or two before your appointment, on towel dried hair run a little bit of product through your hair. I suggest an oil (Oribe Gold Lust Oil) or leave in conditioner (Oribe Supershine Moisturizing Creme) to heat protect and soften your hair. You may also want to add some mouse at your crown or styling creme to your midlengths, basically a small amount of whatever product you normally use. Then let your hair air dry or blowdry style as usual.

  • Bring pictures! We love when you bring pictures! Open up that Pintrest pinboard with your stylist during your consultation. Be open and discuss your likes and dislikes, any environmental concerns, and wardrobe. Keep in mind you may have some style limitations due to the length or thickness your hair.

  • Bring along any hair accessories you would like to add to your style. Fresh flowers or a vintage inspired clip can add a lot to your finished style. #lesliemystylist
